A web-based GIS platform for internal coordination

MCRIT proposed a royalty-free online GIS platform for Amazonia covering Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Bolivia. The platform is based on open source tools and was designed to support internal coordination, monitoring and quality control during the consultancy for the Inter-American Development Bank.

The system uses HTML and JavaScript with the OpenLayers library in the front end, and PHP Apache, PostGIS and GeoServer in the back end. MCRIT hosts the viewer on its own servers. Once the consultancy is completed and all data has been transferred to the IDB, MCRIT may remove the online viewer or keep it active in agreement with the Bank at no additional cost.

A tool for monitoring and cross-checking information

The purpose of the platform is not to disseminate data or results to third parties. Instead, it provides a practical environment for internal use, making it easier for the project team and the IDB to visualise, review and cross-check information throughout the consultancy.

Databases are uploaded to the online GIS so that users can access them quickly and compare them efficiently. This helps improve consistency, supports quality control and facilitates the joint review of spatial information across countries and thematic areas.

Geographic data for regional analysis

The geo-databases include administrative divisions and populated places, as well as key services of general interest such as health and education. They also incorporate indigenous territories, extractive zones in Brazil and transport infrastructure networks for all transport modes.

By bringing these datasets together in a single online viewer, the platform supports a more integrated understanding of the territory and makes regional analysis more accessible for project management and decision-making.
